Augmentative Communication and Educational Technology Service (ACETS)
Mission Statement
Provides assessment and consultation services to children and adults across Southern Alberta who are unable to meet their daily communication interaction needs (face to face communication, digital communication, telecommunications) due to developmental, degenerative, physical and/or sensory limitations.
Provides three streams of service:
ACETS is the southern Alberta assessment center for Speech Generating Communication Devices (SGCDs).

- clinician-to-clinician consultation
- assessment and recommendations regarding augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) tools and strategies
- assessment and recommendations regarding alternate access/environmental controls

Eligibility
Clients must have:
- needs that cannot be met by primary therapy team or another agency
- had their needs addressed by other services such as seating, auditory, ophthalmology
- appropriate level of arousal or alertness
- clear communication goals
- tried no- or low-technology strategies with their primary therapy team
- family interested in AAC services from ACETS
- team interested in AAC services from ACETS
How to Access this service
By Appointment
Any health care provider or family member can refer with support from a primary consulting speech-language pathologist or an occupational therapist. Relevant information to be included with the referral:
- specific communication concern or goal
- motor and developmental diagnoses (e.g. CP, autism, seizure disorders, neurodegenerative conditions)
- receptive and expressive language abilities
- cognitive, perceptual, and literacy abilities
- visual and motor abilities
- educational, vocational, and/or home setting descriptions
- current or prior use of augmentative or alternative communication strategies including SGCD trials
- planned seating appointments
- other service providers/programs/supports involved in the client’s care
- whether the client has access to telehealth facilities through local service providers
