Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD)PDD funds programs and services to help adult Albertans with developmental disabilities to be a part of their communities and live as independently as they can.
The program funds four kinds of staffing supports:
For individuals and familiesThe Alberta government is transforming the Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) program to ensure it continues to be a sustainable system that achieves the best results for the people supported by the program.
It will use an outcomes-focused approach to promote independence and meaningful inclusion in the community. In the future, we want to expand services to people with disabilities such as autism, Asperger’s syndrome and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder who need help but who do not currently qualify. Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD)Parents of children with disabilities sometimes need support so they can raise their children at home and fully participate in community life.
The Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD) Program provides a wide range of family-centred supports and services. Services are meant to help strengthen families’ ability to promote their child’s healthy development and encourage their child’s participation in activities at home and in the community. The program is voluntary; parents remain the guardians for their child and are responsible for all decision-making and the usual expenses of raising a child. The FSCD program works in partnership with families to provide supports and services based on each child and family’s individual needs. Services are available to eligible families of children with disabilities until the child turns 18 years old. FSCD and PDD Integration process (Starts April 2014)
Human Services is in the process of designing a new, streamlined disability supports system. One of the key steps that will move us towards this new program integration is aligning the disability programs under a regional delivery system.
This means that FSCD service delivery will be integrating with the PDD regions effective April 1, 2014.
This new system will enable Albertans with disabilities and their families to be actively involved in and supported by one disability program across their lifespan – with consistent and timely access to the supports they need. In the new system, there will be:

- No transition required between child and adult services
- Services and supports based on assessed needs of child and family
- Support for a broader range of diagnoses (this will be a phased implementation)
